Mônica, Magali, Tina, Mafalda, Rê Bordosa, Rosinha, Radical Chic, Margarida, Betty Boop, Vovó Donalda. Some female characters became top references not only in Brazilian comics, but international comics as well. Strong, funny, conservative, feminists or just polemic, they populate the imagination of several generations of fans of the sequential art. And yet, they’re few compared to the heroes of the opposite sex. That happens because both in the pages of comic books and behind the drawing board where the stories are created, this universe is still dominated by men. One should remember that all these heroines were given life by the hands and the vision of men.

If the number of characters is limited, even less is known about the women dedicated to graphic humor. Professionals like Portuguese artist Cristina Sampaio, or the Colombians Elena Ospina and Nani Mosquera, and the Brazilians Fabiane Bento-Chiquinha, Clara Gomes
and Pryscila Vieira are unfortunate exceptions in terms of visibility, considering the state of this market, although they’re on par with their male colleagues in terms of creativity, originality and skill.

To bring the public near to the works of female graphic artists, the 1st International Graphic Humor Salon of Pernambuco (SIHG-PE) decided to pay them homage in this first edition and also decided to chose THE WOMAN as a theme.

Professionals in this field around the world and students of public schools of Pernambuco state are invited to express their view of the theme by way of a contest of caricatures and cartoons. Three professional works will be rewarded in each category with trophies and prizes in money. The first place wins R$ 6,000, the second place wins R$ 3,000 and the third place wins R$ 1,000.

To the students, only the first place in each category will be rewarded with a coupon worth R$ 1,000 in student material. Up to three works in each category may receive an honored mention, which does not include prizes in money.

All the prizewinners, as well as the rest of the selected works, with a total number of 120 professionals and 20 students, will be part of SIHG’s exhibition between 21 October and 18 November 2012. The exhibition will be at the Janete Costa gallery, located at the Dona Lindu Park, Boa Viagem Beach, in Recife.

Pencils, brushed and mouses in hand, let’s get down to business. Good work!!!
